Professor Wojciech Bienkowski, Ph.D.

Professor Wojciech Bienkowski is the Director of the US Economy and Transatlantic Relations Institute, Professor of Economics and the Dean of the Business School at Lazarski School of Commerce and Law in Warsaw. Dr. Bienkowski received his Ph.D. from Warsaw School of Economics. In his postdoctoral thesis, Dr. Bienkowski analyzed the impact of US governmental policies on the development of competitiveness within the American economy. Dr. Bienkowski was a Visiting Scholar at Harvard University, Nagoya City University, George Mason University, and Johns Hopkins University (Institute for Applied Economics and the Study of Business Enterprise). In addition, he has conducted research in Germany (RFE/RL Institute in Munich), Austria, Italy (the Rockefeller Conference and the Study Center at Bellagio), and USA (University of Rochester).
Professor Bienkowski wrote and coauthored dozens of articles and several books. Well-regarded scholarly journals, such as The Harvard International Review, Comparative Economic Studies, and the Journal of Comparative Economics printed his articles, while distinguished publishing houses such as Palgrave-Macmillan (USA and UK), Cambridge University Press (UK), M.E. Sharpe (USA), Maruzen (Japan), PWN (Poland), and PWE (Poland) published Professor Bienkowski’s books. His latest book Growth versus Security –the Quest for a New Economic and Social Model among Old and New Members of the EU, was published by Palgrave-Macmillan late in 2008.

Dr. Bienkowski belongs to many professional organizations and associations, including the Harvard Club of Poland (in which he serves as a Board Member), the W. Fulbright Scholar Association, the Salzburg Seminar Alumni Association, the Foreign Trade Faculty Alumni Association, and the Association of Polish Economists (TEP). He also serves on the supervisory boards for the Environmental Bank and the Polish Agency for Foreign Investment. Professor Bienkowski served as an advisor to Poland’s Minister of Economy in 2006 and 2007.

Profesor Krystyna Iglicka – Okólska

An economist and a social demographer, Professor at Lazarski School of Commerce and Law, a Polish government expert on migration policy. Krystyna Iglicka received her Ph.D. in Economics in 1993 from Warsaw School of Economics and Habilitated Doctor degree in Economics at University of Warsaw in 2003. She was a Fulbright Fellow at the Department of Sociology at University of Pennsylvania (1999-2000) and a Polish Science Foundation, British Academy and Foreign and Commonwealth Office Fellow at the University of London (1996-1999). She was also a Dekaban Foundation Fellow at the University of Glasgow in 1996. In the period 2002-2003 she was a Deputy Director of the Institute for Social Studies at the University of Warsaw. Since 2004 she has been a member of a Program Board of the Institute for Social Studies at Warsaw University. Prof. Iglicka taught at various Polish universities and also at University College London (UK), University of Glasgow (UK) and University of Birmingham (UK). She gave occasional lectures at London School of Economics (LSE), University Louven la Neuve, University of Sussex, Universida Autonomia da Barcelona, University of Pennsylvania, University of Michigan, Kent State University, University of Minnesota, University of Mannheim. She has served as consultant and expert to various international organizations e.g. European Commission, International Organization for Migration, OECD. Since 2002 Prof. Iglicka has combined her academic work with the work at various Polish think-tanks, such as the Institute of Public Affairs and the Centre for International Relations. Her most recent academic projects scheduled for 2005-2008 include POLITIS, MIGSYS, CLANDESTINO and EMILIE (6th and 7th framework programs of the European Commission), where she works on citizens and governance in a knowledge based society. Prof. Iglicka has presented papers at more than 80 international academic seminars and conferences. She was a keynote speaker and served as a theme conveyor and session organizer in the area of international migration. Works published by Krystyna Iglicka include 10 academic books, nearly 40 research papers/articles in academic journals published mainly in the USA, UK and Poland and numerous policy oriented expertise, reports and analysis.

Katarzyna Gmaj

Ph.D. student at the Institute for Social Studies, Warsaw University. Received M.A. in Sociology from Warsaw University (2001) and in Culture Studies (Warsaw University, 1999). Since 2001 has been collaborating with various NGOs, including the Institute of Public Affairs and the Centre for International Relations. Main interests include migration, ethnic and national minorities. In the period of 2005-2008 Ms. Gmaj worked on research projects within sixth and seventh framework programs of the European Commission, namely MIGSYS, CLANDESTINO and EMILIE. She published academic papers on migration.
